Martyrs of Charity — A Sacrifice the World Must Never Forget

Martyrs of Charity — A Sacrifice the World Must Never Forget
On March 4, 2016, tragedy struck a quiet home for the elderly in Aden, Yemen. Armed gunmen stormed the Missionaries of Charity residence, killing 16 innocent souls — including four courageous sisters who had been given permission to leave but chose instead to stay with the poor they served.

Sr. Anselm, Sr. Judith, Sr. Marguerite, and Sr. Reginette lived their final moments exactly as they had lived their lives — beside the forgotten and the suffering. Their Yemeni coworkers and the young Ethiopian Christians who tried to warn them also shared in that sacrifice.
Only Sr. Sally survived, while Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil was taken hostage and freed 18 months later.

Pope Francis called them “martyrs of charity.”
They died where compassion lives — among the poor, the sick, and the abandoned.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
