Nature’s Most Heartbreaking Demonstration of Love
In 2018, an orca mother named Tahlequah carried her lifeless calf for 17 days, traveling over 1,000 miles through the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest. Scientists called it the “Tour of Grief.”   She refused to let go, gently balancing her baby on her head as her pod swam beside her, even helping when she grew weak.

This was more than instinct — it was mourning. In a world where fewer than 70 Southern Resident killer whales remain, every loss echoes like a storm.
In 2024, she grieved again.

Her sorrow reminds us: love, pain, and devotion are not uniquely human.
