True heroes do not wear capes…

True heroes do not wear capes — they often sit right in the front row of a classroom.
In a world full of tragic headlines, we must pause to honor those who stand up when others run. On an ordinary school day in May 2019, everything changed in seconds at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old senior and robotics club member , was days from graduation with a bright future ahead. When a gunman entered the classroom, Kendrick didn’t hide. He charged forward, tackling the shooter and pinning him against the wall — giving classmates precious seconds to escape or find safety. His selfless act saved lives that day. Tragically, Kendrick was killed, but his courage ensured many friends went home to their families.
His father shared that Kendrick always wanted to help others . They had even discussed such scenarios — and he promised to protect if needed. In that moment, he kept his word with profound character.

The most important lesson? True bravery means putting others first in crisis — choosing action over fear, selflessness over survival. It reminds us: character built daily shines brightest in darkness.
What do you think we can all learn from Kendrick’s legacy?
