Sometimes a hero is just your big brother who refuses to swim away from a shark.

Sometimes a hero is just your big brother who refuses to swim away from a shark.
In 2022, off Florida’s Keaton Beach, 17-year-old Addison Bethea was scalloping in shallow water with her brother Rhett. A perfect, carefree day—until a ~9ft shark suddenly latched onto her leg and pulled her under. Chaos erupted: screams, splashing, blood.

While most would flee, Rhett charged straight toward the danger. He grabbed Addison, fought the shark bare-handed, pried her free, and—with nearby help—got her into a boat. He tied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and called for a rescue chopper.

Doctors later amputated her leg above the knee, but saved her life. Thanks to Rhett’s fearless love, Addison recovered, returned to the ocean she adores, finished school, and became a mom. She says he didn’t just save her that day—he saved her entire future.
True brotherly heroism.
